Having read over 150 books in the last four years, I tend to forget the premise and story I completely immersed myself in. This is an attempt to document the story in summary form. I can’t do justice to the awesomeness of the author, but I can lay down the basic story behind the book itself.
This is the 5th book in the series that follows a child psychologist Alex Delaware, as he assists his detective friend Milo through a series of crimes. Each book focuses on its own mystery.
This book finds Dr. Alex being called to assist in dealing with aftershock therapy for kids of public school after a failed shooting attempt. The shooting was done during a press conference held by Councilman Massengil, during which his opponent Latch dropped by unannounced.
The shooter was shot down by Latch’s aide and was found out to be a 19-year-old girl who lives in the neighborhood. The story develops as Alex is approached by the girl’s father to do psychoanalysis on her deceased daughter to prove she was set up.
When he digs deeper into the reasons behind the shooting and studies more about the girl, another mystery presents itself. The killing of the girl’s friend, Ike Novato. Add the disappearance of an old landlady of Ike, and the plot thickens.
What was the connection between the three events?
A journey into the history of white supremacy in the USA and their failed plans of ridding America of color leads our hero to a series of unexpected twists. Planned bombings, survivors looking for answers, a history lesson into the Bund movement, and an action-packed climax.
